First of all, since the competition on the labour market is high (with the current market), many people are unemployed. Secondly, companies' preferred fields of study and the actual field of study often do not match. In other words, there are few people among the Japanese who choose their studies with their future career in mind.
In the past, it seemed that most people would answer "at work". However, nowadays, the so-called Work-Life balance (WLB) is emphasized, and so it seems that the amount of time spent at work and with the family is more balanced.
For those who recently graduated from school and have been working for three years, in the exemplary years, as many as 30% changed jobs, which is quite a lot.
There are various reasons for this, but most importantly: 1. For financial reasons. 2. Due to stress at work. 3. Because of the future of the company; its stability. 4. Because of the working hours. 5. Due to a mismatch with the company's culture and much more.

Working time

The mere fact of being a foreigner does not affect earnings. Technical skills and being an expert in a given field are certainly an asset.
In Japan, there is a so-called Equal Employment Opportunity Law. Therefore, in accordance with the law, there can be no gender pay gap.

Overtime and taking work home

Of course, this depends on the company, but according to the orders of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, overtime of more than 45 hours per month is not allowed.
There is a fixed overtime allowance and it is included in the payment for the month of the overtime.
In the past, many Japanese people actually worked at home as well. Recently, however, the so-called Work-life balance (WLB) is very much emphasized. Hence, the number of people working outside their main workplace has noticeably decreased.
It is unlikely to be paid extra, so we recommend that you simply do not take your work home.

What you should know before you start working in Japan?
